Blogging

When you blog about any of the short stories, you can discuss characterization, the plot, the theme, or anything you liked about the story. If someone else has commented on that story, you can also respond to their comments, but be sure to use the same label for the post. If no one else has written about that story, start a new post and put the name of the story in the "Label" box at the bottom. Also, write your first name and the first letter of your last name at the end of your post.
I will be reading these every evening, so be sure to write something.

  2. A cure for everything was a descent enough story. It taught a lesson about human greed and need to understand everything around it. in my opinion thjey should have left that tribe isolated from the world. Sure the medical benefits would have been extremely helpful but to destroy something that has been totaly untouched for years in immorale and wrong.

  3. Lost at sea was a inner hero story. a group of friends set out on a boat looking for good times, when all goes bad and the party is put through one of the worst experinces of their lives. The story didnt really grab at my attention, there didnt seem to be anything special about it in any way.

  4. A Robot Vision by Isaac Asimov was by far my favorite short story. It takes place in the year 2033, a group of scientis are working with the idea of time travel. After succeding in building a machine they send a robot into the future and when he comes back they ask him all sorts of rigourus questions to get all of the information he gathered. This book was good all around the story was good, dialouge was solid, and the lesson learned at the end is a priceless one. Definatley give this one a read.

  5. The bet was an interesting story. A banker bets a young lawyer ( I think) 2 million dollars that he cant stay in solitairy confinement for 5 years. The lawyer for some reason boast and says he will stay segregated for 15 years. so through out the years ( not totally sure on those dates) the lawyer stays locked in the garden house having the banker bring him books of all sorts. shortly before he was to be set free he left the room and so forefeiting the bet. this writing was vey good in this story and the morale at the end really spoke to me in the selection. yet agian definatley give this one a read.

  6. the oval portrait was interesting, but the man shouldve paid more attention to his wife instead of painting his life away. the day he's finally realize the time he's wasted it was too late. therefore living in regret.

  7. Bed Time Story

This story was fun to read because it was really short but had a good twist in it. This man is having an affair with his wife, and said he is going to hire a hit man to kill her. But, his wife hired a hit man which also happens to be the lady he is having the affair with.

  8. Ivy Day in tthe Comitte Room

This was a 17 page story about a election in ireland. When i read this story i was completly confused because all that was happening was people were walking in and out of the room creating small talk. The story did not get intresting until the end talking about how they would die for their country.

  9. Pay for the Printer

This was another long story with 14 pages. It is about these people that live in settlements and do not know how to build anything by themselvs. They have this thing called "the printer" which makes copies of any thing, like cars or lighters. But, once the printer starts to die off it is unable to print any more and there for it the people do not have the ability to live any more.

  10. One of the short stories that I read was The Man who was almost a man. The story talked about Dave, the protagonist, who wanted a gun to be proven to be a man. Through getting the gun, and shooting and killing his donkey, he learned that having the gun wasn't becoming a man, but the choices he would make with that gun would.

  11. One of the short stories I read was The Fall of the House of Usher, by Edgar Allen Poe. In this story the protagonist, the narrator, visits his cousin, the antagonist, Roderick Usher, in his haunted castle. Roderick has recently suffered the loss of his sister, and is haunted by her ghost. The narrator learns through the supernatural event that take place that not everyone is sain, and there are some things to great for explanation.

  12. I read Dr. Heidegger's Experiment, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The main character, Dr. Heidegger, invents a potion of youth. He experiments with friends who are eager to participate in the process to go back and undo any wrongs in their lives. This story presents a theme of confliction, and shows the audience that your mistakes and experiences make you who you are, and that can't be simply erased by magic.

  13. I read The Story of an Hour, by Kate Choplin. The main character, Mrs. Mallad, was stuck the duties she was expected to perform because of the society at the time and her gender. After recieving news of her husbands' death, instead of mourning the loss, she embraces the freedom she has waited to experience, only to later die from finding out that he was actually alive. Mrs. Mallard wanted freedom and that she recieved through her death.

  14. Numbers Have It

I read the numbers have it and it was a really good story with a twisted plot. The guy that originally walked into the robbery ended up going back and forth between the robbers and the cops and neither of them know what is going on. This story shows just how far humans will go to fit in with a crowd

  15. Bicycles up Kilimanjaro

I read the short story bicycles up kilimanjaro and it was about two cousins that hiked up mount kilimanjaro with their bikes on their backs. The two cousins wanted to be the first people to ride their bikes down the full lenght of the mountian. This story shows that if humans really put their mind to something and try hard almost anything is possible.

  16. The pony express

I read the short story the pony express and it told how the pony express originally got started. During the gold rush in california it would take weeks sometimes months for people to get their mail because they were so issolated from the rest of the world. They really needed a way to get mail faster so a bunch of young men got together and started the pony express. You had to be able to ride a horse and shoot a gun to be a part of it. They put their lifes on the line everyday fighting indians, wild animals, and facing mother nature. Even though they did all of these things no body even really thinked them and thats what this shot story was wrote for.

  17. I read "The Dinner Party" by Mona Gardner, people from different backgrounds are eating together and talk about several things, one of them being that women get scared by the smallest things. One of the Americans present at the dinner, notices a bowl of milk. In India this means that there is a dangerous snake and he notices that the hostess is the one that noticed too so he told everyone to stay still, and the one that dindt was going to have to pay. When he sees that the snake is in the bowl he tells everyone they can move again. At the end of the dinner he asks the hostess how she found out the snake was right there, and she told him that it was crawling up her leg. Which is very ironic because minutes before that happened, they were talking about how women get scared about everything.

  18. "Another Evening at the Club" by Alfaa Rifaat.

This story is about a woman married to a wealthy man, when he asked her to marry him he gave her a beautiful emerald ring and she always wore for important occasions. One night they were at the club, had a few drinks, went back home and the next morning she woke up looking for her ring because she didnt see it where she usually put it. So, she looked for it everywhere, and no sings of it so she decided to blame it on her maid because she was the only one there, her husband sent the maid to jail, beat her up and did many things to her; she always swore she didnt have it but no one believed her. Few days later, the wife found it behind her dresser, but they decided to hide it and dont tell anyone so they werent ridiculed. I think its really bad, that because of her mistake that poor girl had to get beat up and go to jail and they didnt even recognize their mistake.

It starts when Tay Soon, a happily married man has big dreams and whishes all of them come true. But his biggest one was having a huge house, he and his wife have been saving for it for a long time now, he heard that some people were putting their money in stocks so he did it too. It didnt take much time for them to make good money, but they grew greedy and kept on getting money, even when they had almost everything to pay for the house. At the end, the stocks dropped and they ended up bankrupt just because they got a little bit too happy and obssessed with money.

  20. "The Lottery Ticket" Anton Chekhov

Ivan and his wife were looking at the newspaper, and as always she told him to check for the lottery he did it just to make sure they lost again, but this time was different the numbers were the same in a matter of few seconds they saw their lives as millionaires. Ivan noticed that his wife's look was mean, selfish, he started thinking that she was going to take all his money away and she thought the same thing about him. Finally, they realized that they made a mistake when looking at the numbers and it was a different one. I think it was really bad, because just at the possibility of getting some money they act like they have never seen money before and start hating each other, so it was good that they didnt get it after all.

  23. "Gerald no last name"
I think that it is important to know the people that you love and care about. Because when you don't know his/her last name than it would feel like you never knew that person.

It is amazing how what Americans can look forward to having robots then turning the robots into human form then the robots wanna die because they find out that humans live then they die so they wanna live like a true human so they also wanna die like a true human. And some robots also wanna experience love in there life and when they die they wanna have a persons hand to hold when they take there last breath and have there last heart beat they want someone to be by there side life till death..-Austin H.

  28. The Nicest Kid in the Universe was one of the short stories i enjoyed. It was about a boy who was nice to everyone and did right on everything. I found it quite humorous how he didn't notice that earth had a moon.

In the story a wife always bought a lottery ticket but never expcted to win, yet she checked it every day. One day the husband who thought it was a waste of money check it for her and thought they had his number, the whole family started to be rude and turn on eachother then found out that it wasnt there number.

I enjoyed this story because you see this happen all the time when people run into a large sum of money

  30. I really enjoyed The Lottery Ticket by Chekov. I think it shows the true feelings of love when money is involved. when faced with being able to do anything in the world from being so rich, people tend to want that at all costs. They become paranoid and brooding and do everything they can to secure the money for themselves.

  31. THE CHASER

I really enjoyed this story! Alan was in love with this girl, Diana, that never paid much attention to him and he went to a wizard type guy who made him a love potion to make her fall in love. I relate to this because he had done something to decieve Diana and have her fall for him. Which is what guys do alot of the time, they change themselves and tell you things you want to hear to decieve you to make you fall for them, and when you do the truth comes out on who they reallt are. And they were talking about peoples reactions and they were different from the people at the dinners party reactions. But totally spoke about my reaction i would be freaking out if there was a snake at my feet!!! JANE FRISBY

  33. "The Man Who Shouted Teresa" Italo Calvino

I liked this short story because it was odd in the beginning how the protagonist was yelling Teresa up into a building. It got me interested and wanting to read more. I also liked how random people in the street would help him yell Teresa too.

  35. "The Lottery"
This story came off as boring and annoying at the beginning but the last couple paragraphs definetly gave the story a twist. It's somewhat weird to think that a town would have a tradition such as the one they did.
